The UK Faces Severe Weather Warning for Heavy Rain

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across large parts of the UK this weekend. The warning is in place from 9pm Saturday evening until 6pm Sunday, covering almost the entire lower part of England and Wales. The rain is expected to reach as far up as Sheffield and stretch across from Immingham in Lincolnshire down to Tenby in Pembrokeshire. This new band of heavy and thundery rain is set to arrive on the south coast on Saturday and move northwards overnight. There is a risk of up to 100mm of rain in some areas, leading to potential power cuts, flooding, and difficult driving conditions.

Although there is some uncertainty regarding the exact details, the Met Office predicts that heavy and at times thundery rain will spread north, then west, across England and Wales from Saturday evening and overnight. Western areas are likely to experience more persistent heavy rain during Sunday daytime, while slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop further east.

Rainfall amounts are expected to vary considerably across the warning area, with some locations receiving less than 10mm of rainfall and others receiving 40-60mm of rain. There is a lower chance that some spots within the warning area could see 80-100mm of rain by the end of Sunday, particularly in the southern half of the warning area. Given the recent heavy rain in the region since Thursday, the impacts of this additional rain may be more severe than usual for this time of year.

While sunny and dry spells are still expected further north, conditions are set to turn cloudier and milder. Cooler and fresher temperatures are anticipated across the country into next week, with a generally unsettled outlook, according to forecasters. It is crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay vigilant, prepare for potential flooding, and follow safety guidelines provided by authorities.
