While the Trump campaign’s statement alluded to Iranian hackers being responsible for the breach, there is no concrete evidence supporting this claim. Cheung cited a Microsoft report warning of Iranian hacking attempts to influence the U.S. presidential election as the basis for this accusation. The report mentioned that Iranian hackers had made multiple efforts to interfere in the election, including sending phishing emails to high-ranking campaign officials. Despite these claims, Microsoft has not confirmed whether the Trump campaign was specifically targeted by Iranian hackers.
Earlier this summer, U.S. officials uncovered an Iranian plot to assassinate Trump, although no direct link has been established between the recent hack and this assassination attempt. The revelation of this plot coincided with the attempted assassination of Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania. However, the source behind the hack, identified only as “Robert”, did not provide any information on how they accessed the documents or their motives for leaking them to Politico.
The reported hack on the Trump campaign comes at a time when the Federal Bureau of Investigation is issuing warnings about cybersecurity threats globally, particularly those targeting U.S. election processes.
