A new, more dangerous variant of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, has been identified and is believed to have already made its way to the UK, according to an infectious diseases expert. The clade 1b strain of this viral disease has been confirmed in several countries, including Sweden and Pakistan, after first being detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization due to its rapid spread in African countries, with over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths reported.
Professor Paul Hunter has warned that it is “very likely” that someone in the UK is already infected with the new variant of mpox. However, confirmation of cases may take some time as individuals with symptoms need to visit a doctor for testing. The disease initially presents with flu-like symptoms before the characteristic blisters appear, which can be easily mistaken for other illnesses. The risk of infection is relatively low for most people unless they are involved in certain high-risk activities such as sexual contact within specific networks.
Mpox is primarily spread through contact with fluid from the blisters, especially during sexual contact. While infection through other means such as skin-to-skin contact is possible, it is considered rare. The disease starts with non-specific symptoms that progress to the development of blisters on the face and other parts of the body. Despite the severity of the new variant, Professor Hunter reassures that for most individuals, mpox is a relatively mild illness from which they can recover on their own.
The UK Health Security Agency has stated that the risk of infection from the new mpox variant is currently low in the country. Additionally, the existing mpox vaccine is reportedly effective against this new strain, providing some level of protection. Health officials advise anyone with symptoms or potential exposure to seek medical attention promptly from their genito-urinary clinic or a general practitioner for testing and treatment.
The emergence of a new and more dangerous variant of mpox poses a significant threat not only in African countries but also in the UK. Vigilance, early detection, and adherence to health guidelines are crucial in preventing the spread of the disease and minimizing its impact.
