Rich Hill Returns to the Majors at 44

Rich Hill, a 44-year-old lefty pitcher, has been selected by the Boston Red Sox from Triple-A Worcester in an attempt to continue his extensive career in the majors. With nearly two decades and over a dozen teams under his belt since his big league debut, Hill has the opportunity to make history by appearing in a game in each of the past 20 seasons if he pitches in 2024. Manager Alex Cora praised Hill’s physical condition and dedication to his craft, expressing excitement about his return to the field.

Despite an injury-depleted pitching staff, the Red Sox have not revealed their specific plans for utilizing Hill. However, Cora mentioned that Hill is willing to contribute in any way necessary for the team. Wearing the No. 44 jersey, Hill could potentially follow in the footsteps of former teammate Tim Wakefield, who pitched for the Red Sox at the age of 45. Wakefield, who sadly passed away last October, holds the record for the oldest pitcher to play for the Red Sox.

This marks Hill’s fourth stint with the Red Sox, as he signed a minor league deal with the team in August. During a recent start for Worcester, Hill threw two scoreless innings, demonstrating his readiness to return to the majors. With a career spanning 382 games and 248 starts, Hill has amassed a record of 90-73 and a 4.01 ERA. Born in Boston, he has previously played for various teams including the Cubs, Orioles, Indians, Athletics, Angels, Yankees, Dodgers, Twins, Rays, and Mets.

In light of the injury to right-handed relievers Luis García and Lucas Sims, the Red Sox made additional pitching moves by placing them on the injured list. Greg Weissert and Josh Winckowski were recalled from Worcester, while Brad Keller was designated for assignment. The team will continue to navigate through their pitching staff challenges with the addition of Rich Hill to the roster.

Rich Hill’s return to the majors at the age of 44 is a testament to his enduring passion for the game and his willingness to contribute to any team in need of his services. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Boston Red Sox, fans and fellow players alike eagerly anticipate the next milestone in Hill’s remarkable career.
