The tragic incident involving the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily has left many questions unanswered. The recent reports suggest that the banking boss, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, suffocated to death in an air bubble as the oxygen ran out, rather than drowning when the yacht sank, according to Italian media. The investigation into the incident has revealed that there were no signs of injuries on the bodies of the victims examined so far, indicating that they may have died due to the lack of oxygen and high levels of carbon dioxide in their cabins.
Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer were among the seven people who lost their lives in the tragic incident. The group, which also included British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his daughter, lawyer, lawyer’s wife, and the yacht’s chef, were on a celebratory trip when a violent storm hit, causing the yacht to sink in just 60 seconds. The divers who recovered the bodies found them on the left side of the cabins, suggesting that they were seeking the last pockets of air as the vessel tilted to the right after sinking.
The Investigation Continues
Italian prosecutors have placed the boat’s captain, James Cutfield, and two Britons, engineer Tim Parker Eaton and crew member Matthew Griffiths, under investigation for suspected multiple manslaughter and culpable shipwreck. The investigation aims to understand the events that occurred in the 16 minutes between the storm hitting the yacht and its sinking. The remaining post-mortems on the victims, including Mike Lynch, his daughter, and the yacht’s chef, will shed more light on the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
James Cutfield, the boat’s captain, has been quoted as saying that he was informed about the strong winds by Griffiths, the crew member, and immediately took action to alert everyone on board. Cutfield described how the yacht tilted to one side before suddenly lurching the other way, causing them to be thrown into the sea. Griffiths recounted the harrowing experience of trying to save as many people as possible after the yacht sank, highlighting the chaos and desperation that ensued in those critical moments.
As the investigation continues and more details emerge, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk beneath the surface, even on luxurious and seemingly safe settings like a superyacht. The untimely deaths of Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, along with the others on board, have left a void in the lives of their loved ones, underscoring the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of taking every precaution when at sea. May this incident serve as a lesson for all those involved in the maritime industry to prioritize safety above all else and to never underestimate the power of nature’s fury.
