The Metropolitan Police has issued a stern warning following the outbreak of violence during this year’s Notting Hill Carnival. The annual event, which celebrates Caribbean culture in west London, was marred by a series of violent incidents, including stabbings that left several people injured. The police force is urging the public to come forward with any information that can help prevent further violence at the carnival.
During the Sunday celebrations, three people were stabbed, with one victim – a 32-year-old woman – remaining in critical condition in the hospital. Shockingly, the woman was attending the carnival with her young child on what was supposed to be the “family day” of the event. Additionally, a 29-year-old man is also in the hospital in a non-life threatening condition, while a 24-year-old man with non-life threatening injuries discharged himself. The police made a total of 103 arrests on Sunday for various offenses including violence, robbery, sexual offenses, drug offenses, and possession of offensive weapons. Furthermore, 18 officers were assaulted during the course of the day.
Response from Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who is overseeing the policing operation at the carnival, expressed his frustration at the recurring incidents of violence. He emphasized the need for a collective effort to address the issue, stating, “We are tired of saying the same words every year. We are tired of telling families that their loved ones are seriously injured, or worse. We are tired of seeing crime scenes at Carnival.” Adelekan stressed the importance of the community coming together to ensure that the carnival remains a safe and enjoyable event for all participants.
The senior officer called on individuals with any information regarding the stabbings or potential plans for further violence at the carnival to come forward. Adelekan highlighted the potential impact of sharing information, stating, “It is no exaggeration to say that you could save a life by doing so.” The police are seeking cooperation from the public to prevent any more incidents of violence at the Notting Hill Carnival.
The Notting Hill Carnival is one of the longest-running street parties in the UK, dating back to the 1960s. Organizers bill it as “the greatest community-led event on the planet,” attracting around one million attendees over the two-day celebration. The carnival is known for its vibrant parade, filled with costumed performers, music, and dancing. However, recent incidents of violence have overshadowed the festive atmosphere of the event.
Security Measures
In response to the violence, the Metropolitan Police have implemented a section 60 order, granting officers additional search powers in the carnival area until early Tuesday morning. Additionally, a section 60AA order is in effect, allowing officers to order the removal of face coverings used to conceal a person’s identity. These security measures are intended to ensure the safety of attendees and prevent further instances of violence at the carnival.
