WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of developing a feature that will allow users to block messages from unknown accounts. According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new toggle will enable users to prevent messages from unidentified senders, ultimately improving the performance of their device and ensuring the security of their account.
This new setting, which can be found under the Privacy > Advanced menu in the settings app, will automatically block messages from unknown accounts that exceed a certain volume. While the feature is still under development and not yet available for users to test out, it appears that WhatsApp is taking steps to safeguard user accounts while maintaining efficient functionality on smartphones.
In contrast to WhatsApp’s approach, the messaging platform Signal restricts messages from unknown accounts by default. Signal requires users to either Accept, Block, or Report a conversation initiated by an unidentified user, with read receipts not being displayed until the recipient accepts the message request. This proactive approach by Signal ensures that users have control over who can contact them, minimizing the risk of unwanted messages.
Aside from the new message blocking feature, WhatsApp has also introduced the ability for beta testers to react to status updates with a heart emoji. Similar to Facebook and Instagram, this feature allows users to quickly respond to photo, video, and text stories uploaded by other users.
After updating to WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.17.21, beta testers should see a new heart icon located at the bottom right corner of the screen, next to the reply bar. This functionality mirrors the quick reactions available on other social media platforms, enhancing user engagement and interaction within the app.
According to WABetaInfo, users will be able to view a list of contacts that have reacted to their status updates. This feature will provide users with insight into who has engaged with their stories, creating a more interactive experience similar to Instagram.
The integration of status update reactions is expected to roll out to users on both iOS and Android in the near future, enhancing the overall user experience on WhatsApp and encouraging more meaningful interactions among users.
