The chairman of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo were among the six people still missing after a luxury yacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily. The yacht, named “Bayesian,” was hit by a violent storm and tragically capsized near the port of Porticello. Bloomer, who is also the chair of insurance firm Hiscox, and his wife Judy were both among those missing. British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah were also missing as search and rescue efforts continued.
While the search and rescue efforts were underway, the Italian emergency services faced challenges in accessing the inside of the wrecked ship due to obstacles and narrow access points. Unfortunately, the presence of the missing individuals could not be verified through cabin portholes. However, operations were planned to open access points to the cabins to aid in the rescue mission. The tragedy has deeply saddened the families and loved ones of those missing, as well as the broader community impacted by the incident.
The boat trip was meant to be a celebration following Lynch’s acquittal of fraud charges after a lengthy legal battle with Hewlett Packard. Lynch, who is the founder of enterprise software firm Autonomy, had faced accusations of inflating Autonomy’s value in an $11 billion sale. His co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, was also acquitted but tragically passed away after being hit by a car while jogging in Cambridgeshire. The celebration quickly turned into a tragedy as the yacht sank amidst the storm, leaving loved ones in shock and grief.
The president of the region of Sicily, Renato Schifani, visited the children’s hospital in Palermo to see a British one-year-old girl and her parents who were rescued from the sinking yacht. Schifani emphasized the solidarity and commitment of health workers and Civil Protection volunteers as crucial resources for the community during such challenging times. The tragedy has united the community in grief and support for those affected by the incident.
